July 9, 2010 Executive
Meeting with Pool Officials:
Last
week Greg, Jack, and Colleen met with pool and Frank Kennedy staff to
express some concerns. Here is Greg's synopsis of the meeting:
On Friday, July 9 I along with Colleen Metge and Jack Spence met with pool
officials Simon Wang, Facilitators Coordinator, Ashley Gagnon, Pool
Coordinator, and Maribelle, Customer Relations rep and after discussing
some of our concerns about the use of our pool time and some safety issues
which I had sent to them a week prior to our meeting, we came to the
following agreements:
- the dressing rooms will be open at 7:50 at most times and at 7:55 at the
latest on Sat mornings.
- the lane markers may not be in place at 8:00 exactly but should be in
place at 8:03.
- there will be 2 lifeguards in the pool area at all times, one on deck and
'attentive' and the other available to help: a) when called by the first
lifeguard, and b) when the numbers of swimmers exceeds 35, and c) when the
first lifeguard requests help in the event young children are present and
it is too difficult for one guard to supervise.
- the use of rope loops (in lane 6 and perhaps in lane 1) will be
investigated with safety in mind.
- we will be able to use the pool until 10 pm on Tues and Thurs.
- Maribelle will look into allowing us room for our pamphlets in the
customer service area and will look into our using their brochures to
advertise our club.
- we can hang our 30"x72" banner on the pool wall next to the
stairs to the dressing rooms, the cost of which will be borne by us and
done by university staff.
Incidentally we ordered two banners for the $250 which the executive passed
at our last meeting. We will be able to hang one permanently in the pool
and the other will be used when we go to swim meets. I guess they were
cheaper than we were quoted because the artwork was done and in an
acceptable form for easy printing. We will have these at the end of next
week

Volunteers Needed
Swim
Manitoba is hosting the Canadian Age Group Swimming Championships at the
Pan Am Pool from Wednesday, July 21 - Sunday, July 26. They are sending out a huge call for volunteers to
all swim clubs in Manitoba, including masters swimming, because they need
to fill nearly 1,000 volunteer positions over the course of the event! We
are sending out a request to our membership to please consider volunteering
for this prestigious swimming event. There are several reasons to consider
giving a little of your time:
It's an opportunity to experience the excitement of a top-level meet and
see some really fast and fabulous swimming by Canada's top young swimmers
It's an opportunity for Mid-Can to build some goodwill with Swim Manitoba
Each club receives a share of the profits from the swim meet based on the
number of volunteer positions they provide
We realize that summer is not the best time of the year to be asking for
volunteers, but if you can work a session, it would certainly be greatly
appreciated. Please give it some consideration. If you can volunteer or
need more information on what the volunteer positions are, please contact:
Sharra Hinton

afterwards. The stations will be strategically placed in the top locations
along the ride to ensure maximal visual pleasure during your shift.
